Starting position — Single-Arm Band Overhead Press

Why it matters

The Overhead Press builds strength and size in your front deltoids, chest and triceps. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Anchor the band securely, check there is no slack at the start, and expect the tension to rise through the range.
  2. Set your ribs down and squeeze your glutes before you press overhead.
  3. Set your grip just outside shoulder-width with the load at shoulder height.
  4. Squeeze your glutes and take a breath to keep your ribs down.
  5. Press the load straight overhead, moving your head back slightly to clear the path.
  6. Once the load passes your forehead, move your head back through and finish overhead.
  7. Lower under control back to shoulder height.
  8. Complete all your reps on one side, then repeat with the other, matching the reps on your weaker side.
