Dumbbell Push Press

Starting position for the Dumbbell Push Press
Starting position — Dumbbell Push Press

Why it matters

The Push Press builds strength and size in your front deltoids, chest and triceps. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Choose a pair you can control for every planned rep and get them into position cleanly.
  2. Set your grip just outside shoulder-width with the load at shoulder height.
  3. Squeeze your glutes and take a breath to keep your ribs down.
  4. Press the load straight overhead, moving your head back slightly to clear the path.
  5. Once the load passes your forehead, move your head back through and finish overhead.
  6. Lower under control back to shoulder height.
