Starting position for the Medicine Ball Dead Bug
Starting position — Medicine Ball Dead Bug

Why it matters

The Medicine Ball Dead Bug builds strength and size in your rectus abdominis, hip flexors and obliques. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Pick a ball weight you can control and clear the space around you before you start.
  2. Set your lower back flat against the floor before you move a limb.
  3. Set your position and take the slack out of your midsection before you begin.
  4. Start each rep from a controlled, stable position.
  5. Move slowly and deliberately through the working range.
  6. Pause briefly where your midsection is working hardest.
  7. Control the return rather than dropping quickly at the end.
  8. Extend opposite limbs slowly while keeping your torso completely still.
