Starting position — Hack Squat Machine

Why it matters

The Hack Squat builds strength and size in your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and rectus abdominis. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Adjust the seat and any pads so the working joint lines up with the machine’s pivot, set the pin to your working weight, and keep contact with the support pad throughout.
  2. Set your feet about shoulder-width with your toes turned out slightly.
  3. Take a full breath into your belly and brace before you descend.
  4. Break at the hips and knees together and lower under control.
  5. Descend until your thighs reach at least parallel to the floor.
  6. Drive through the middle of your foot to stand back up.
