Starting position — Dumbbell Russian Twist

Why it matters

The Russian Twist builds strength and size in your obliques. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Choose a pair you can control for every planned rep and get them into position cleanly.
  2. Set your position and take the slack out of your midsection before you begin.
  3. Start each rep from a controlled, stable position.
  4. Move slowly and deliberately through the working range.
  5. Pause briefly where your midsection is working hardest.
  6. Control the return rather than dropping quickly at the end.

Watch out for

The detail

Tempo
Move slowly in both directions and avoid using momentum.
Breathing
Exhale as you contract, breathe in as you return.
Range of motion
Work through a range you can control without your lower back taking over. Take the obliques through its full working range each rep.
Setting up
Choose a pair you can control for every planned rep and get them into position cleanly.
If you are new to it
Reduce the range or leverage until you can control every rep.
Once it is easy
Add a pause at the hardest point of the range for extra tension.
