Starting position — Kneeling Cable Crunch

Why it matters

The Kneeling Crunch builds strength and size in your rectus abdominis. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Set the pulley to the right height, attach the handle, and step back to remove the slack before your first rep.
  2. Lie on your back with your feet flat and your lower back in a neutral position.
  3. Take a kneeling position with your hips stacked under your shoulders.
  4. Set your position and take the slack out of your midsection before you begin.
  5. Move slowly and deliberately through the working range.
  6. Pause briefly where your midsection is working hardest.
  7. Control the return rather than dropping quickly at the end.
  8. Curl your ribs toward your hips, lifting one vertebra at a time.

Watch out for

The detail

Tempo
Move slowly in both directions and avoid using momentum.
Breathing
Exhale as you contract, breathe in as you return.
Range of motion
Work through a range you can control without your lower back taking over. Take the rectus abdominis through its full working range each rep.
Setting up
Set the pulley to the right height, attach the handle, and step back to remove the slack before your first rep.
If you are new to it
Reduce the range or leverage until you can control every rep.
Once it is easy
Add a pause at the hardest point of the range for extra tension.
