Roman Chair Back Extension

Why it matters

The Roman Chair Back Extension builds strength and size in your erector spinae. As a compound movement, it trains several muscles together and carries over to real-world strength and power.

How to do it

  1. Adjust the seat and any pads so the working joint lines up with the machine’s pivot, set the pin to your working weight, and keep contact with the support pad throughout.
  2. Set your position so your torso can move from a forward bend to a straight line with your body.
  3. Set a flat back and brace your midsection before the first rep.
  4. Raise your torso by extending your hips and lower back until your body forms a straight line.
  5. Squeeze your glutes at the top without arching past a straight line.
  6. Lower under control back to the start.
