Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Starting position for the Dumbbell Lateral Raise
Starting position — Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Why it matters

The Lateral Raise builds strength and size in your lateral deltoids. As an isolation movement, it targets those muscles directly to build size and balance.

How to do it

  1. Choose a pair you can control for every planned rep and get them into position cleanly.
  2. Set a tall torso with a slight bend in your elbows.
  3. Start with the load under control at your sides or front.
  4. Lead with your elbows and raise the load to shoulder height.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Lower the load under control to the start.
